The day honours the lost children and Survivors of residential schools, their families and communities. Public commemoration of the tragic and painful history and ongoing impacts of residential schools is a vital component of the reconciliation process. Both the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day take place on September 30.
In 2017, the Manitoba government passed Bill 221, to proclaim Oct. 4 of each year as Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls Awareness Day, making Manitoba the first province to proclaim Oct. 4 as an official day.

The observance of the Day aims to promote an understanding of disability issues and mobilize support for the dignity, rights and well-being of persons with disabilities.
