Risk Management Bulletin Volume 1 No. 24
Christmas Decorations

Now that Halloween and Remembrance Day have passed, many schools begin to put up Christmas decorations. Last year, a new trend was seen with many classrooms wrapping their doors in Christmas wrap to simulate a present.

The Manitoba Fire and Building Codes DO NOT ALLOW for combustible materials such as paper on doors in public buildings. This type of covering can be a severe fire hazard and the smoke generated as well as the flame could prevent people from using the doorway.

Please do not allow this type of decoration in your schools and be particularly careful with all decorations. The Manitoba Fire and Building Codes are Manitoba Regulations and it is therefore against the law to cover doors in a public building with any type of material.
