Student Safety Measures School
Intrusions
In the past twelve months there have been a number of
reported cases in Winnipeg of students being attacked inside their schools by
outsiders during school hours. To assist schools and school boards in making
decisions to try and prevent similar situations in the future, these practical
steps should be considered.
- Consider locking all exterior doors at 9:00 a.m. and
immediately after lunch so that everyone is directed to the front or main
doors. School personnel can open doors at recess time and lock them after
recess is over. Inform everyone that the main door is the normal entrance
area.
- Train all staff and volunteers so that they are
prepared to recognize, address and report outsiders seen in the school. A
simple "Can I help you?"
- Street proof your students so that they are aware of
strangers in your school and will advise teachers and administration of
these people. In Winnipeg, your Winnipeg Police School Resources Officer is
available to come in and assist you with this endeavour.
- Consider the use of cameras in the main entrance with
a monitor in the office area. There are devices such as VCRs and motion
detectors that may enhance your camera surveillance. A hall monitor person
can also be of assistance. Signs directing
people to the office should be placed in various areas.
- Protect your office staff by installing an access
alarm that can summon the police or other staff in case of emergency.
The preceding advice is provided by Sgt. Randy Vertone
School Resources Unit (Winnipeg Police 986-2909) and Keith
Thomas Risk Manager, MAST (233-1595). Please call either individual for
further discussion.
Schools outside of Winnipeg should call their local
police detachment.
