BEING PREPARED

We understand that custodians are often relocated/reassigned to different schools and this can mean different duties.

It also means working with equipment with different operating conditions and different histories.

It is imperative that anyone taking on the responsibilities of a new/different school thoroughly familiarizes him/herself with the equipment, its operation, history and quirks.

Operation and maintenance logs should be studied and maintained. History can also be obtained from predecessors, other custodians or maintenance or custodial staff.

Keep in mind that such things as hot water, steam heating and HVAC systems are very different. For example, air conditioning and heat pump systems are different and can require different attention/maintenance.

Know the equipment on hand - where electrical breakers are located, for example. Take time to trace water, air and heating piping so their condition can be monitored easily and, should problems arise, be able to quickly isolate the problem section to minimize possible damage.

Confirm that equipment and lines are marked and labeled/identified correctly.

Preventative and predictive maintenance is paramount to efficient and safe operation.

Familiarisation with the building and its equipment should be a priority.

Any deficiency or problem area should be addressed as soon as possible.

Be a well-informed custodian. Take charge to make sure problems or accidents are prevented.
