School Board Elections - October 26, 2022

School board elections are a great opportunity for Manitobans to get involved in public education - by voting for your local trustee or by running as a candidate. This section provides information for both candidates and school boards. This material has been prepared as a guide; candidates are encouraged to review the relevant legislation for complete information.

You can find out more about the role of a school trustee by talking to a current or past board member, by attending a school board meeting or by visiting your school division's website. The primary role of a school board is the determination of policy or the laws under which a division or district operates. Click here to view board policy manuals or here to view board minutes.

For information about running for office in your division or district, contact your school division office. Candidates running for trustee on boards within the cities of Winnipeg and Brandon will find additional information on those cities’ websites.

This mentorship program is offered to serve candidates from diverse and underrepresented communities. It provides candidates from Aboriginal and Indigenous communities, newcomer and visible minority communities, and persons in need of accessibility, the opportunity to receive specialized training in:

• the role of the trustee and the responsibilities of a school board,
• how to navigate procedural requirements to become a candidate,
• tips and strategies for establishing and funding an election campaign, and
• campaign communications platforms.

This program complements MSBA’s traditional public information sessions which are open to all candidates regardless of background, prior to the elections. All prospective candidates are invited to attend information webinars being held in May.
